155th Anniversary of Juneteenth
On June 19th 1865, US General Gordon Granger arrived in Texas and stated, “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.” Although the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued two years earlier, this was the first time Texan slaves were made aware of their freedom. Today, Juneteenth is a celebratory day marking the end of slavery in the United States. CCHC wishes you a safe, happy holiday and to remember that Black History is American History.
